First Grade!

Kyler is now officially a first grader! He said he had a great day. He told me his teacher wore a gold shirt, high heels, was young (like me!) and skinner (not like me!). (Maybe this boy is a bit too observant!!) He got through the whole say without getting in trouble - nice - and even got to get up in front of the class to show off how he did his math problem - very nice. One day down, only 179 to go!
I also had my first day teaching Calculus BC. I admit I was a bit nervous, but the kids seemed to take me in okay, no major eye rolling, and I taught what I need to. Tomorrow begins the real book work, but I consider today a victory for sure.

Here's to a great school year for me and Kyler!

Swimming Lessons

We were happy again this summer to be able to take swimming lessons and the YMCA. Konner and Kassidy were in the toddler class and we put Kyler into a "big kid" beginner class. He was definitely the least experienced of the group, but with each week grew more and more confident. (I also think that some fun, no pressure swimming days with friends and at the park pool was a great help too!) Kyler can now jump into the deep end and make his way back to the side without being too anxious about it all! Konner and Kassidy did very well too. Kassidy was very enthusiastic about all they asked her to do and cheered on Konner when it was his turn too. Konner did pretty well also - that is when he wasn't getting in trouble from the lifeguard for not sitting on the step! (Yeah, I know he was "that kid"!) We had tons of fun and hope it fits into our schedule next summer too.

A Nice Little Visit

We have been trying to get out to see Great-Grandmother a few times this summer and with school around the corner we knew it was time. We were fortunate to have Aunt Amanda, Juliette and baby Aubrey be able to join us. I got to cuddle with Aubrey all through lunch, so nice, and the kids were (shockingly) well behaved as all the other residents came over to peek at all those great-grandkids! I even got a cute shot of Great-Grandmother and all the kids (I won't tell you how many not good ones there were!).

A Backyard Movie

Welcome to movie night at the Foxes! We have a new toy for our backyard...a ginormous inflatable movie screen. Add some speakers and a borrowed projector and ta-da we have an event! We have spent two nights so far in the backyard watching movies. This evening we invited friends over from church. It is so cool! Now I just have to make a list of what we want to watch next.

Twice the OC Fair Fun

Since we couldn't figure out how to get all our best friends together at one time, the Fox family decided to make it out to the fair twice this year. The first time was on opening day. We braved a long wait, but were able to get parking for free and entrance into the fair for free too! Crystal and Malino were with us as we checked out all the animals, did lots of shopping and browsing from vendors, and ate some yummy treats. Jason and my dad later joined us for dinner, dessert (of course), some browsing through the photography gallery and the kids went on some rides. On our second trip we did something different by riding a direct bus there and back for super cheap and got in for only two bucks. We met Uncle Jeremy and Juliette plus the Fritz / Holtkamp/Scheid clan for some more fun. The kids checked out the animals again and played in the kid zone. We got to catch up and remind ourselves how much we missed everyone. Dinner was had, we caught the pig races (always a fun event) and the kids went on some rides too. Kyler got three free rides each time we went by doing an easy book report (nice for him and us). Both times we went with good friends, ate good (read tasty, not healthy!) food and had a good time. What more could you ask for!!

Niagara Vacation Round-Up

We did a TON is just one short week. With all of the story telling, I didn't have a chance to share some of the more light-hearted moments of our trip. Here are some of my favorite moments.

-At the Science Center at lunch: Janelle to Jason, "Could you make any more crumbs?" Jason proceeds to make a larger mess with the toast from his sandwich. Kyler quips, "That's science."

-Discovering a train yard next to our parking garage in downtown Toronto: Konner exclaims, "Look! Free rocks!"

-Anytime Konner was feeling a bit tired: "I need a drink of water. My leg hurts."

-After the second time in a row Jason missed the entrance to the freeway after church services: "Not again!"

-After Kyler fell down some stairs in the huge tower in Casa Loma: Janelle to Kyler, "Did you miss a step?" Kyler replied, "No I missed a lot, that's why I am crying." A whole family nearby couldn't help but giggle - me too!

I just love family vacations and the fun and funny memories they create. Here's to the next one!!

Hockey Hall of Fame

Tuesday was the return home day but since we had an afternoon flight we caught one more attraction Toronto had to offer. The Hockey Hall of Fame is right in the middle of the business district so parking was an adventure, but as soon as we were inside it was heaven for the guys. They had so many cool jerseys, memorabilia, and special displays for the Hall-of-Famers. We had a great time. Even though we were in Canada they had great stuff from the USA and past Olympic regalia. The kids especially loved their activity area where all the kids got a chance to play goalie. Kyler was able to stop 2 pucks (even though he insisted in standing in a baseball hitting stance!), Konner stopped 1, and wait for it, Kassidy stopped 3! She was pretty much standing in the right place and wasn't exactly thrilled the pucks kept hitting her. Kyler then took a try at shooting some pucks, but didn't quite have the power to get any across the goal line.My favorite part was having the chance to get up close and personal with the Stanley Cup. It was so cool!! We got to also look at all the original rings that were on the cup and check out how it has changed over the years.
It was a nice way to spend the morning and afternoon before it was time to fly back home. As usual we had crammed a lot into our vacation and were dog tired from all our adventures, but boy was it worth it!

Casa Loma and Royal Ontario Museum

On Monday is was back to Toronto to hit two of the major tourist spots the city has to offer. Casa Loma is pretty much a castle tucked into the middle of a residential area. The man who built the home in the early 1900's was party of the Queen's army as well as an entrepreneur. He wanted to echo some of the grand estates the well-to-do in America and Great Britain were building at the time (think along the lines of Hearst Castle, but smaller). He had the most innovative plumbing and lighting systems for the time and a magnificent garden and stables. Before he could finish it, the market took a turn for the worse and he went bankrupt. It has since been turned into a hotel, another private residence and is now a tourist attraction. It is beautiful inside and out! Jason, Kyler and I even climbed the stairs all the way up to the top of the tallest tower-what a hike, what a view! There were rooms for everyone-husband, wife, son, guests, guests, more guests, servants, servant, and more servants-and pretty much each had their own bathroom too. It was amazing! After some lunch it was a few blocks over to visit the Royal Ontario Museum (ROM). This place is huge and had exhibits on just about anything and everything. We did not see everything (our legs, feet and temperaments could only take so much!) but we were amazed at everything we could take in. There was a whole floor dedicated to dinosaurs. Another wing full of stuffed version of just about every kind of animal, bird, and creeping creatures. They had a "kid zone" with tunnels to crawl through, costumes to try on, and puzzles to complete. We checked out the ancient Egyptian artifacts and coins, pottery and statues from ancient Greece. There was a wing full of all kinds of furniture from across the decades and another on the first people of Canada. One of my favorite sections was the gemstones, minerals and rocks. The beautiful colors and types of stones made me wish for some fancy jewelry.
We left feeling culturally fulfilled and dead tired from all the walking and standing. It was then a long drive back home and some repacking for our departure the following day. We of course squeezed in some dessert (for the 5th day in a row) to make a sweet ending.
